Just found this xwiki offshoot that is highly relevant to this participatory media wiki in terms of goals and technology: http://www.netcipia.com/xwiki/bin/view/Corporate/Why
"Netcipia is the first participative suite and the most powerful and easiest to use wiki available on the Internet. Netcipia gives you both a blog and a wiki in a single package, accessible through the same interface, with the same great tools and features."

sorry, but PMCA Guidebook seems more appropriate. would this be too cumbersome to change? If others agree, I'm glad to do it...

done ;) that's ok if we can't change the URL. changing 'technologies' to 'pm' seems iffy considering the number of links i'd be breaking. but i think this is fine. it reflects the co-evolution of this thing...

we all ranked our entire chunk, not individual cases (e.g. youtube) - would it be possible to apply criteria to multimedia sharing tools in general, to keep the guidebook consistent?

I don't think that it is very useful at all to compare flickr to youtube, for example. Even different video sharing sites are difficult to compare because they are very similar in essence and different in ways that our criteria do not point out. For example, blip.tv is better than YouTube because there is profit sharing and you don't have to sign over rights, but this is not evident from our criteria.
But, as you can see in the Rate section, you can go to a table that shows all of the media compared to each other. So, you get the same thing at the end of the day.

Hi. I added some info about delicious. I think that it's my favorite social bookmarking tool, but for none of the social reasons. As someone who is knee deep into graduate research, delicious is most useful as a way to sift through the millions of tiny pieces of information that come my way. Often, I don't have time to look at each of them in-depth so I make sure that I can find them later through delicious, in the case that they become really important later, as I am writing up my prospectus, etc.

I think this also left out the value of being able to track down people by interest. As a reporter I often find people to interview through sites such as Facebook. Putting yourself out there allows people to find you more easily, but you can also find the best people for your group and target them. This is one of the ways in which this tool is better than just a Web site or blog per se, it allows you to reach out to specific people instead of hoping that people with like interests will just find you.

To my knowledge, there has been no systematic study of virtual worlds used as participatory media for collective action, and their effectiveness as such. The above therefore cites use cases without conjecturing about their effectiveness. As studies emerge, however, I hope users of this online guidebook will contribute references and discuss the effectiveness virtual worlds as pmca.

There has been some research done on people who meet in video games and often later work together for social changes. Some guilds on World of Warcraft are based around a religious ideal. Also, people in a guild will sometimes get together to donate toward a charity, such as Child's Play.

for my chunks, things also depend, but I just made a general estimate and then made a note if it's highly variable. for traffic, use alexa.com to check traffic on the most-read blogs (we're referring to the entire blogosphere, right?). also, I think we can delete "comments" because not all of us used that criteria.

the rating for cost on blogs says:
"cost = $, it’s free to start most blogs, but if you eventually want audio and video that will cost more. Also, some blogs hire designers and others eventually have to buy server space."
should we include these kinds of comments ("it's free to start...") in the ratings themselves, or have them as threads below? I didn't include my comments, but I was wondering about this...

otherwise, users will have to go back and forth between criteria and chunks in order to interpret the ratings. e.g. I'd have no idea what "traffic: 2" means unless I went back to the criteria page (think user experience). could we make a pop-up window or a nav bar or something? Shawna, if you teach me, I'd be glad to do it.

Wouldn't it be cool if a user could just pick their own criteria and then see which Technologies match their criteria? Maybe I'll see if there's a way to do this on the wiki.

I can't find a way to do this... because wetpaint doesn't allow html editing, only WYSIWYG (definitely a limitation we should mention here in the guidebook). My other thought is coding a widget to help us and adding that... haven't been successful thus far but I will keep looking around.

I made a Criteria Table Template, use it when posting your criteria pages. I also listed the criteria tags on my RSS page, so you can just copy and paste those.
